Short BioShanaze Danielle Reade was born to an Irish mother and a Jamaican father, on 23rd September 1988, in Crewe, Cheshire. She grew up with her sister, Daisy and brother, Noel. She attended Victoria High School, which was located nearby. She fell in love with BMX at the age of 10, when her uncle took her to the local BMX track to watch her cousin’s race. Afterwards, Shanaze hired a bike out for £1 and said it was the best pound she has ever spent. Soon afterwards, she began racing at Tipkinder Park in Crewe. She was mentored by a local track operator named Bob Field, whose son was also racing at the time.

From the age of 17, Shanaze competed in many major competitions and championships, winning various medals throughout, including winning the UCI BMX World Championships 3 times. She developed her strength, racing against boys and older men and really enjoyed beating them. Throughout her career, Shanaze has had many injuries, including a broken knee, foot, elbow and a bone at the base of her spine. Pain is nothing new to her!

On 9th July 2008, Shanaze was named the only woman member of the UK BMX Olympic team by British Cycling. She was the favourite to win the gold medal in the women’s BMX event. After her 2008 Olympic defeat she didn’t really want to race again. Now she feels she is back properly, mentally and phisically and feels on top of the world again and hopefully, it will all pay off, with the reward of an Olympic Gold medal in London 2012.
