 Maria Kirilenko is the rising star of Russian Tennis. Born in Moscow on January 25th 1987 where she still lives, she was introduced to tennis at the age of 7 by her father Uri. Known affectionately as “Makiri” she joined the WTA tour at the age of 16. Kirilenko is one of the new breed of Russian athletes - tall, blonde, nubile girls, usually with pony tails, and incredibly beautiful. They all attract the attention of the press and also the young men love them. The Russian girls tend to stick together on the circuit and she is close friends with Maria Sharapova. There was a time when a lot of the players on the WTA tour were perceived to be lesbians but not any more. This new breed of beautiful women all have equally beautiful boyfriends, usually fellow players or experts in another form of sports and Kirilenko is no exception. She has been dating fellow Russian powerhouse player Igor Andreev for some time.
